The road to becoming a Certified Child Life Specialist…
Hi, my name is Ashley and this is my Child Life blog Peace, Hope and Play.
I have always wanted to work with children because my life was impacted through my own experiences as a patient at Riley Hospital for Children
In 2012, I graduated from Vincennes University with an Associate’s Degree in Child Development. While attending Vincennes University, I was a mentor for two years with the disability services. I helped plan welcome events, helped students study for midterms/finals and helped students find their classes and made them feel welcome.
In 2013, I transferred to Ball State University where I am majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences with concentrations in: Child Development, Child Life, Family Studies and minoring in: Psychology of Human Development. I have participated in several activities and organizations, with two of the most notable being Ball State Dance Marathon, and a service organization, Epsilon Sigma Alpha, benefiting a variety of philanthropies—St. Jude, Camp Riley and Easter Seals. I am also a member of the Family & Child Student Organization, and served as Vice-President for the 2014/2015 school year.
I have volunteer experience at a variety of settings, including Damar Services for children with special needs, Head Start, Ball Memorial Hospital, the Child Life department of Riley Hospital for Children and most recently completed my Child Life practicum at Memorial Children’s Hospital . My overall career goal is to start a Child Life department in a children’s mental health facility.
